For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control.

- 2 Timothy 1:7

Have you ever seen a cat when they are startled? They can literally flip backward, upside down, and land on their feet. It’s incredible.

When startled or afraid, I tend to respond more like my dog. I freeze or start talking about my fears to anyone who listens.

I have a little schnauzer, and she is genuinely all bark. I have observed this daily for years. She immediately barks if she sees a dog or goes outside when it’s dark.

The bigger the perceived threat, the louder and more rapid the bark.

Did you know that we all experience fear, but don’t respond the same in the same manner?

That’s why the Bible speaks about it so much. Fear can cause several emotional responses.

You may have heard of the fight or flight syndrome. Most people will either run away from the perceived danger or stressor, or “come out swinging,” so to speak.

You may feel overwhelmed or trapped by your situation, trying to escape through food, alcohol, television, or other addictions. You might even experience a heightened physical response. Or become so overwhelmed by worry and anxiety that you find it hard to cope.

But God tells us that the angst we are feeling, that knot in our stomach…is not from Him.

He doesn’t give us a spirit of fear.

So, when that old worry creeps into your throat and paralyzes you with sleepless nights, remember that God doesn’t want you to live afraid. He wants you to trust Him with your worries, fears, and frustrations. Jesus wants to walk with you through this time. He tells us He will give us a spirit of power, love, and self-control.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, as I draw near to You today, please give me your peace of mind. Guard my heart and help me turn my concerns and worries over to you to handle. Amen.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
